Karma

Back during my first year of college when I lived in a dorm (wait, I mean residence hall) my friends and I would go to I-House (International House) to have dinner at the all-you-can-eat-buffet. Anyone who has had a meal with me knows that I can be a picky eater, but I would try a few new things every once in a while. And I wouldn't like it. So I would spend the end of my meal building my mashed potatoes into a fort with flag, little men and an orange pop moat. Or I would mix together the milk, juice and pop to see what would happen (curdling fizz, perhaps). You get the idea. My friends were all slightly disgusted by it and I wonder now why they kept inviting me to eat with them.

I keep flashing back to that as I'm too late to stop Xander from pouring his milk into his stew. Or as I see him dip his mandarin orange in ketchup (by golly, he ate it). Or when I come from the basement to find the new hairstyle is hair spiked with yogurt. Yeah.

6 Months and some Firsts

Josie turned 6 months on Christmas Day. That's how we remember her birthday, it's on Jesus's half birthday.

We had to wait for the holidays to end before getting her in for her check up. Once again, she's a healthy baby girl.
Weight: 16 lbs, 5.5 oz. - 75th percentile
Height: 25.5 in. - 50th percentile
Head: 16.5 in.

While there, I proudly told of how Josie doesn't need to stand and cruise around on the furniture because she rolls so darn well. Seriously, I've nearly lost her a few time as she rounds a corner or hides under the Christmas tree.

When Chris brought the Christmas decorations out of the attic, he also brought out the Jumperoo. Josie took to it straight away, jumping and grabbing at the hanging birds and even getting turned around. We kept making comments about how Xander took a while to warm up to the Jumperoo and we just watched Josie in awe of her mad jumping skillz (that's right, skillz with a z).

We've said Xander loves Josie, he hugs her, picks up her toys and hands them back, even tries to share his food with her. Josie is now interactive enough that we can see she loves Xander right back. She gets the happiest smile on her face whenever he goes up to her and laughs when he plays with her, like holding her hand to help her dance. Of course she smiles when he is on the naughty step, so maybe she just likes to smile.

Josie's first tooth arrived today! Lo and behold, it was one of the bottom, center teeth. Many others seem ready to arrive.

So between the anticipation of teeth and turning 6 months, we are trying some purees with Josie. We tried a little rice cereal first, which mostly got an amused reaction from her, like she found our efforts to feed her laughable. Sweet potatoes and peas went ok.

Grean beans did not go well.

And since I received a food mill for Christmas I am already making baby food and freezing it for future consumption.

Holiday Recap

Wow, I almost happy to get back to the regularly scheduled programming. It has been great to see everyone, but it can be tiring getting the kids around.

The week before Christmas, Xander had a nasty stomach bug. It involved repeatedly vomiting in his bed. It took me a couple sheet changes to finally figure out to lay down towels. The poor little bunny didn't even seem upset by it, which is better than him wailing away and waking up Josie. The thing that woke me up was a wet cough followed by his light turning on. When I went in to check, Xander said "Pee" but the smell said otherwise.

The next day was ok until evening which included projectile vomiting. He wasn't sick after that but it took several days for his appetite to return. Chris and I woke up with sour stomachs at one point but that was all.

Chris's mom visited all that week, so the attention lavishing began before Christmas. Even now, Josie seems confused as to why she doesn't always have someone smiling at her or holding her.

Anyway, we visited relatives galore. The kids were spoiled rotten, favorites being two different Elmo toys and Woody, among others.

Chris was home the week after Christmas and he proudly spotted Josie's teeth working their way up. He leaned over her to play and she started screaming. "Hey, look, you can see where teeth are coming in." They haven't rubbed through, but you can see where the gums are bumps. Oddly enough, they aren't the front bottom teeth, but are the sides of the bottom. We'll see what comes through first.

Xander used the break to work on his language skills. Mainly, he's putting together short sentences and he is saying "No." A lot. "Nonono." "Mm-mm-mm" usually is accompanied by a head shake. He's using his new found powers of the negative to decline foods he doesn't like.

He also, largely due to his illness, regressed on the potty training. The ironic part is he does well when we are out. At church, he disappeared from next to me and I see him heading to the back. When I caught up to him, he was trotting along saying "Go pee." I followed him right to the rest room and surely enough, he went. Now we just need to work on going at home.

And that is the completely disjointed account of our Christmas break.
