Josie Turns 1

At times I'm amazed that Josie is already one. At other times I'm amazed that she is only one. This year has flown by and my little baby is a smart, adorable girl. Right now, while I'm typing this, she just put a toy away and applauded herself. Seriously?! It's all I can do not to pick her up and cuddle her. Ok, I did pick her up and cuddle her.

Her official birthday was Friday, half-Christmas. At random points during the day I would make Xander sing "Happy Birthday" to her. We went and picked up more supplies for her party and I made the cake and cupcakes for her party (but didn't frost them until Saturday). Poor Xander was tortured by the cakes sitting out and at one point I caught him about to lick the cake. Then Chris's mom arrived and heaped attention on the grandkids.

Saturday was the big party. After much deliberation, I decided how the cakes were to be decorated and finished those up (I'll put up a post and more pictures on my blog later). Aunt T showed up early and added onto the the heaping of attention. Then guests arrived and Josie's party went into full swing.

It was a gorgeous day, though a little hot. That didn't stop the kids from playing on the swing set, in the sand box, on the helicopter, with the frisbee golf, etc. So parents huddled in the shade with cool drinks. At one point, Chris went out and covered all of the kids with suntan lotion and he repeatedly brought out drinks.

I finally managed to get Josie in the high chair and everyone sang "Happy Birthday". Xander tried to help blow out the candle and finally was able to eat some 'happy birthday cake.' Josie grabbed a small bite of icing and tried it. Then tried another small bite. Then squished the rest of the cake in her fists and smeared it on her face. I think some made it into her mouth but I'm not positive.
We didn't get to open all of the gifts while people were there, so spent some time opening them in the evening. Josie only had a couple of wrapped presents (most were in bags) but she had a ball opening this one from her uncle and aunt.

And of course there is the visit to the doctor's office to top off the one year celebration. That happened on Monday.

21 lbs (50th percentile)
28 inches (30th percentile)

Besides the horrible sobbing during the shots, there wasn't much of consequence. She's eating well, drinking well and sleeping well. There has been some uncontrollable sobbing in the mornings but the doctor thinks it's just separation and her knowing that when I set her down I could leave.

At the tender age of one, I'm amazed at what Josie can do. It's not like she's ahead of the curve, I think it's more of a girl vs. boy difference. Josie can manipulate small objects, such as putting a triangle through the triangle shape. She points and gives high fives. And of, the language and talking! If you know what to listen for there is mama, dada, ball, bottle, cat, and now quack and cow.

My favorites are "There she is" and "Tickle, tickle." During Peek-a-Boo, Josie will say...something...with lots of glee. It took the babysitter to realize that she was saying "There she is" when she'd drop the blanket she's hiding behind. Other times she will crawl up to me, stand up and scratch at my leg saying "Tee, tee, tee!" in a high pitched squeal. I finally caught on to that being her trying to tickle me. Then Xander will join in and I'll have to be overcome with tickle fits to appease them.

What a hoot.
